Future Search Reunion
The future search group reviewed various images of architecture and provided feedback on what the new Woman's Hospital should look and feel like.

Overnight accommodations? We are considering hotel-like services. The hospital may not provide these services but may work with an outside organization to facilitate this need.

Fitness Club? We want to have fitness services on the new campus and might find a partnership opportunity to facilitate.

Concerns related to personal work space? The Workplace Resources Committee will create standards for employee work environments. Updates about specific departmental workspaces will come from area managers and directors.

Outside walking track? We are considering a walking track and green areas for employees to rest as well as exercise.

Hall of Stars? We will photographically document the Hall of Stars and then carefully remove each star. We hope to be able to return as many of the stars as possible to the original donors as a keepsake. The program will then be revamped at the new hospital to be more flexible while still allowing parents the opportunity to display their infants' names.

What will happen to the hospital’s existing location? At the moment, it is difficult to predict. The hospital will remain in full operation at the existing site for the next three years, and no plans are yet in place past that time.

New Campus Development
By Stan Shelton

Since we are working at an accelerated pace to ensure the new hospital will be built to accommodate our patients' needs, much of the activity of the moment focuses on planning. As decisions are made, we are dedicated to bringing them to you immediately.  Here is an overview of the progress we have made.

Universally-Sized Patient Room: Mock Up
We are continuing to move forward in the creation of universally-sized patient rooms. On February 14 and March 8, more than 55 nurses, physicians and staff members viewed a mock room. The mock up entailed moveable walls, the patient bed and all the equipment that would be needed for the various uses that could be performed in each type of room. Over the next month, we will actually construct a 'real' room to scale. The room will be constructed in the Business and Technology (BAT) center. Once it is constructed, we'll make opportunities for people to visit and give feedback.

Room Amenities
After the patient room size and shape are finally determined; we will work on room amenities.  Amenities will include what is in the room from where the TV sits to how many shelves and cabinets are installed.

Medical Office Building
We have also selected Lillibridge to plan the medical office building(s).  They will coordinate the planning and, perhaps, the construction of these buildings.

Blocking and Stacking
On April 5, a group will begin work blocking and stacking.  What this means is we are deciding, based on information submitted by area managers and supervisors, what departments need to be close together. Once these adjacencies are determined, we will begin blocking and stacking departments to determine how the overall building will layout.

Future Flexibility
We want to be prepared for the expected as well as the unexpected and have the space and flexibility to work through future issues. For example, developing a universally-sized room will help us to facilitate this because with slight adaptation, any room may be used for any type of patient.  It will provide us the opportunity to reallocate space to different services and departments if needed in the future.

Office Space
Catherine Nipper and I traveled to Dallas to get ideas for office layouts.
The Workplace Resources Committee will continue to be involved in setting standards for employee work environments. Specific departmental workspaces updates will come from area managers and directors in the next couple of months.

8-week look ahead
During the next eight-week period, we will:

·            Build a 'mock' patient room

·            Merge the construction planning process with the Operational Efficiency process coordinated by Tefen

·            Begin schematic design meetings with internal planning groups

·            Finish campus master plan

Patient Safety is Our Priority
The American Hospital Association and the American Medical Association have launched a campaign called 5 Steps to Safer Health Care to educate consumers on how to receive safe, high-quality healthcare.

At Woman’s Hospital, safe patient care is our top priority. As part of helping our patients, we have distributed brochures for several years encouraging patients to ask us questions, and we have patient information booklets we give to all patients to explain the procedures they will have and what to do when they go home.

We encourage patients to:

  • Ask questions if they have doubts or concerns.

  • Keep and bring a list of ALL the medicines they take.

  • Get the results of any test or procedure.

  • Talk to their doctor about which hospital is best for their health needs.

  • Make sure they understand what will happen if they need surgery.

Purell© Alcohol Foam Dispenser

For the safety and well-being of our patients, visitors and employees, Purell© alcohol foam touch-less dispensers have been placed at the main entrances to the hospital and in the cafeteria.  The correct amount of foam is dispensed in your hand when you place your hand under the dispenser; rub the product over all of your hand surfaces until dry.

Hand washing or using the alcohol foam should be done before and after eating, before and after glove use, after using restroom, before and after touching patients and after coming in contact with patient equipment.  Purell© 32 oz tabletop dispensers are available to be ordered from Materials Management for your work area.  This product kills 99.99% of most common germs that can cause illness, can be used anytime and any place without water or towels, and does not leave a sticky residue.  Remember hand hygiene is the most effective way to prevent infections.
