Magnet Moment
By Kristy Simmons

The Magnet Nurse Champions recently hosted the first annual Woman's Hospital "Magnet Nursing Open Forum". Students from
Southeastern, OLOL, BR Community College, Southern and BRGH School of Nursing visited Woman's and learned about magnet designation. Nursing unit displays were set up and tours of our specific nursing units were given. Students were able to network with nurses from the hospital, along with nursing students from other nursing programs.

In hopes of encouraging the future nurses to select a Magnet facility when they searched for future employment,
a short presentation on the attributes of Magnet nursing was given. Research shows that Magnet designation contributes to positive patient outcomes, professional nursing practice and overall job satisfaction.

We had a great turn out and plan on making the forum an annual event. Two of the students that attended already had jobs lined up at Woman's Hospital.

Health Information Privacy and Security Reminder

What can happen when an employee breaches patient confidentiality?

A breach (violation) of security or confidentiality of patient information will result in disciplinary action, up to and including discharge from Woman’s Hospital. Accessing patient information that is not related to your job is a breach whether or not you tell someone what you learned.

Examples of breaches:

  • You just learned that a friend had surgery in the hospital recently.  You look up in Meditech to see when she was a patient here.

  • As you are filing reports on patient records, you see the pregnancy test results of a relative.  Later that evening you tell your mother your relative is pregnant.

  • You have access to Meditech modules.  You access medical information of a coworker to see the sex or birth date of her newborn baby.
