Baby Grand
Woman’s Hospital hosted its bi-annual baby fair, Baby Grand, on Saturday, November 10. Baby Grand is a collection of activities for expectant parents, which include a variety of workshops, tours of the hospital, exhibits, and door prizes including gift baskets, photography packages, and numerous gift certificates.

More than 350 moms-to-be attended the fair to learn about Woman's Hospital services and enjoy fitness demonstrations and a maternity fashion show.

da Vinci Open House
Woman’s Hospital surgery team successfully performed their first robotic minimally invasive surgery in November. An Open House was well attend as employees came to see our new robot!

The da Vinci Robotic Surgical System is a minimally invasive microsurgery procedure that helps increase women's likelihood of having a shorter hospital stay, less pain, and faster recovery. In short, it will help our patients get back to their lives more quickly.

Christmas Families
The Christmas Families project is underway! Departments wanting to adopt families can review the list and select a family.

Non-perishable food items, pantry staple items, and household items can be contributed to the annual food drive. Items that can be donated include shampoo, soap, laundry detergent, dish detergent, bathroom tissue, paper towels, cleaning products, etc. All items should be new, unused, and unopened.

There are big families on the list so bulk items (up to 10 lbs.) like rice, flour, sugar, etc., will be accepted. All food and items will be collected when the gifts are dropped off on Wednesday, December 19 and Thursday, December 20. All food, toiletries, and household items collected will be distributed amongst the families. The department weighing in with the most food will win a cake!!! The winning department will be announced on Sunday, December 30.

Bulletin Board

New Medical Director
Dr. Marshall St. Amant has been selected as the new medical director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Dr. St. Amant has been on staff at Woman's Hospital since July 2005. He graduated from medical school at Louisiana State University in New Orleans where he also completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology. After completion of a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, he served there as assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine for a couple of years before returning to LSU Medical Center as faculty. He is board certified in maternal-fetal medicine.

Construction Update - Pharmacy
The pharmacy renovation is moving along quite well. Phase one of the project, which encompasses new office and storage space, has been completed as of Wednesday, November 7. Phase two of the project which occurs within the main pharmacy is underway. This phase requires that the construction area be accessed from the main hallway across from conference rooms 1, 2, & 3; although this hallway will not be restricted. The project is on schedule to meet the mandated deadline of January 1, 2008.

Recertification
Sheila Reagan, Infection Control Coordinator, has recently passed the Self-Assessment Recertification Examination given by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology. The certification is valid for a five-year period through December 31, 2012. Sheila has been certified in Infection Control since 2002.

Employee Health
Patricia “Puddin’” Samrow has recently been promoted to the position of Employee Health Coordinator.  In her new role, Puddin’ will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Employee Health department.  Puddin’ joined Woman’s last April as an Employee Health Nurse, and has over twenty years experience in occupational health nursing.  She is also certified as an Occupational Health and Safety Technologist and is a Certified Occupational Health Nurse Specialist.  Please join me in congratulating Puddin’ on her new role.

Ellen Campbell’s contributions to Woman’s during her 22-year tenure here are immeasurable.  The Employee Health department’s focus on patient satisfaction, safety and compassionate care are a direct result of Ellen’s leadership.  Ellen has decided to move into a part-time Employee Health Nurse position in order to spend more time with her family.  She’ll still be around to pat your arm after your flu shot! 

Patsy LeDay Shropshire continues in her role as departmental secretary.  Lucie Agosta continues as Nurse Practitioner in the wellness clinic.  Lucie has also accepted a teaching position at SLU.  As a result, there’s a new face in the clinic.  Sharon McElwain is an experienced Family Nurse Practitioner and ensures that each of us receives the level of personal, quick and compassionate service we’ve all come to expect from the clinic.
