Book Club
Are you interested in joining
a hospital-wide book club? It would be a way to connect departments
and entertain employees interested in reading and socializing as
well as provide a sense of community within the hospital.
The book club will enrich lives through literacy,
volunteerism, and culture.
If you are
interested in joining, please contact:

Junior Volunteers
in the Pink
|
Our first group of 2008 Junior Volunteers arrived June 9 for
orientation day. They learned about hospital procedures, HIPAA,
safety, infant security and more. They also started the TB
testing process. Tours for the first day included Mother/Baby
and newborn nursery, NICU/Special Care Nursery, and GYN/
Oncology. Central Services and Surgical Services tours took
place later the first week. |
 |
2008 Junior Volunteers were thrilled with their new uniforms. The
girls received many compliments about the color and style of the new
scrubs!! Special thanks to Lisa Garland and her staff for their help
in ordering and monogramming the uniforms.
|
Session 1 volunteers also helped Michelle Spear from the
hospital’s Therapy Center with a special service project.
They sanded and painted “mending wands” for new breast
cancer patients to use following their surgeries. These
mending wands are given to patients by the hospital’s
physical therapists to aid in performing range of motion
exercises. They are greatly appreciated by our patients –
especially when they are hand painted by our junior
volunteers!! |
 |
A total of 59
students will participate in the program this year, donating more
than 3,000 service hours to hospital departments. Special thanks to
sponsoring departments for your ongoing support of this program.
If you would like to view a video of the junior volunteers journey
throughout the week, click

Session 2 junior volunteers will be on campus from July 14 - 24.
Please call Pam Parker (ext. 8156) or Leda Smith (ext. 8723) if
there are any special projects you need help with.
Finding Your Way at Woman's
Each week it seems that the hospital is adding something new – new
services, new hours, new locations, new extensions! It’s hard for us to
keep up with all of the changes. Imagine how confusing it must seem to
our patients and visitors! This is one area where we can all positively
impact patient satisfaction scores.
Each of us has the opportunity to make our patients and visitors feel
welcome from the minute they arrive on our campus. One of the most
important ways we can do that is by reaching out to patients and
visitors and asking them one simple question – “How may I help you?”
Helping patients/visitors find their way around the hospital will be
easier now, thanks to Eugenia "Genia" Sorey, one of our Corps/Cuddler
Volunteers who is also a Guest Relations Representative at Entrance 4.
Genia developed a comprehensive chart that provides details on
services/locations/hours to help her guide patients and visitors looking
for more information. Shellie Castille, Information Systems, took this
chart and adapted it to a user-friendly database with a drop-down menu.
Thanks to Shellie, this new database is now available on the Intranet
for all employees and volunteers to use.
You’ll find the new database in the Featured On-line Services section.
Just click on “Service and Hours Information” and you will go directly
to the drop-down menus of services. Click
here to check it out.
Please check out the info about services your department provides. Let
Pam Parker (ext. 8156) know about any changes/updates that need to be
made. We will continue to add information to this section as new
programs and services are developed.
Is That Round Pink Thing a Poker Chip??
|
No, Woman’s
Hospital is not getting into the casino business. In May,
Directors were provided with a supply of these tokens to use
as a means to instantly recognize their employees as they
are found doing something extraordinary. It’s a way that
supervisors can catch employees doing something right.
If you have
been the recipient of one of these tokens, they are each
worth $1.00 and are redeemable in any of the hospital gift
shops towards the purchase of merchandise (they are not
redeemable for cash).
So be reminded
when going through your daily activities that being caught
doing something may not always be a bad thing!

Vita Stevens
|
Family and friends joined the Call Center staff to wish Vita
Stevens a fond farewell on May 23rd.
Vita started working at the hospital in 1999. She
strutted around the conference room in her Betty Boop biker
scrubs, and her Harley Davidson boots, smiling from ear to
ear. Vita and her husband, Willie will enjoy their
time riding their Harley and traveling. They’re
looking forward to a trip they have planned to Thailand in
the next few months. |

co-worker Meridel Oliver, who also retired from the Call
Center last month after 16 years of service. Meridel
says she’s going to make her pooches happy by spending more
time with them curled up on the couch. The Call Center
staff will miss Vita and Meridel’s laughter and singing. |
