New Campus Development
By Stan Shelton

Future Search Reunion
On February 13, we conducted a reunion of the future search group.  The group consisting of nursing staff, administration, physicians, patients and support staff met to discuss the look and feel wanted at the new facility. Architects from HKS and Ford|Dickinson led the meeting.  The group reviewed various images of architecture and provided feedback on what the new Woman's Hospital should look and feel like.  The architects will take that feedback and develop exterior concepts for the buildings.  As soon as those are developed, we’ll make them available to you for comments and suggestions.

Universally-Sized Patient Room
Since we’re committed to
universally-sized patient rooms, we needed input as to the best use of space for multiple purposes. On February 14, more than 55 nurses, physicians and staff members viewed a mock room.  The mock up entailed moveable walls and the bed and equipment that would be needed for the various uses that could be performed. Thank you to everyone who helped us begin the process in establishing the patient room size and orientation. Over the next month, we will provide opportunities for additional staff to see the mock up as we refine it further, then actually construct a 'real' room to scale.

8-week look ahead
During the next eight-week period, we will:

·            Mock up a patient room

·            Merge the construction planning process with the Operational Efficiency process coordinated by Tefen

·            Engage a firm to help us plan the medical office buildings

·            Convene the physician committee

·            Begin schematic design meetings with internal planning groups

·            Finish campus master plan

Also, over the next several months, we will create numerous opportunities for participation in the process. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Jodi Conachen at 924-8527.

Q&A: New Campus Development

Suggestions

  • Correct loading dock issues
There will be service entrances at the new facility to more efficiently load supplies.
  • Green space at new campus
  • Have 2 NICU ORs and at least two entrances
  • Chair massages for employees and/or pregnant women

Thank you to everyone who sent emails or stopped by Lunchtime Visits with Administration to share your thoughts and ideas. The more input we have, the closer we move toward building a superior, well-planned facility. We don’t have all the answers yet but we have recorded your questions, comments and suggestions and will continue to update you as we know more.

Will there be overnight accommodations on the new campus?

We are considering hotel-like services. The hospital may not provide these services but may work with an outside organization to facilitate this need. We do feel that this is an important service that our patients and staff want.

Will the Fitness Club move to the new campus?

We want to have fitness services on the new campus and might find a partnership opportunity to facilitate. We will have a master campus plan completed in the next month which will start to outline where and what new services will be at the new location.

Specific concerns related to personal work space

Area managers and directors submitted information regarding departmental office needs. That information has been collected and provided to the recently formed Workplace Resources Committee. They will create standards for employee work environments. The employee committee has developed goals for employee-related spaces including guidelines that will encourage collaboration and healthy activity, respectfully provide the space, furniture and equipment necessary for staff to efficiently and ergonomically perform their work, ensure future flexibility, and take advantage of technology-related solutions. They will be making final decisions in the next month. Updates about various departmental workspaces will come from area managers and directors.

Will there be an outside walking track for employees?

We are considering a walking track and green areas for employees to rest as well as exercise. We are still working on the master campus plan which will now be distributed in March.

What will happen to the Hall of Stars?

We will photographically document the Hall of Stars and then carefully remove each star. We hope to be able to return as many of the stars as possible to the original donors as a keepsake. The program will then be revamped at the new hospital to be more flexible while still allowing parents the opportunity to display their infants' names.

What will happen to the hospital’s existing location?

At the moment, it is difficult to predict. The hospital will remain in full operation at the existing site for the next three years, and no plans are yet in place past that time.

Lunchtime Visits with Administration

In addition to questions and suggestions concerning our new campus development, many employees gave valuable feedback on current hospital issues. Here is an overview of some of your suggestions and comments. Please continue to keep us informed of your thoughts and feelings as we work to provide the best environment for employees and patients. Once again, we don’t have all the answers yet but we have recorded your questions, comments and suggestions and will continue to provide feedback as we know more.

Fix security issues We have implemented new strategies (links to previous article) to ensure our employees feel safe and secure in their work environments. We value your input and will continue to make adjustments as necessary.  Please feel free to share any ideas or concerns as we work to make the hospital a safe environment for patients and employees.

Use real silverware, no plastic – We are working to reduce the use of plastic and Styrofoam at the hospital and as we move forward into our new facility.

Wrecks in front of hospital – Unfortunately, there have been a couple of wrecks in front of the hospital as people turn from Airline Highway across the newly-opened 3 lanes of traffic. We would like to remind employees to exercise caution if you choose not to use the traffic lights at Goodwood and Connell’s Village. Please be careful and drive safely.

Weekend childcare for babysitting needs - Hope Juge, Child Development Center, has several CPR-certified staff members who are available for babysitting, especially on weekends. If an employee is interested in utilizing these services, please call 924-0363, ext 0 or email hope.juge@womans.org.  Babysitting fees are charged by the hour.

General Suggestions/Comments

  • Free lunch on your birthday

  • Create music therapy department

  • Make significant strides in computerized charting

  • Chapel services on holidays other than Ash Wednesday
