Future Search Reunion
The future search group reviewed various images of architecture and provided feedback on what the new Woman's Hospital should look and feel like.

Overnight accommodations? We are considering hotel-like services. The hospital may not provide these services but may work with an outside organization to facilitate this need.

Fitness Club? We want to have fitness services on the new campus and might find a partnership opportunity to facilitate.

Concerns related to personal work space? The Workplace Resources Committee will create standards for employee work environments. Updates about specific departmental workspaces will come from area managers and directors.

Outside walking track? We are considering a walking track and green areas for employees to rest as well as exercise.

Hall of Stars? We will photographically document the Hall of Stars and then carefully remove each star. We hope to be able to return as many of the stars as possible to the original donors as a keepsake. The program will then be revamped at the new hospital to be more flexible while still allowing parents the opportunity to display their infants' names.

What will happen to the hospital’s existing location? At the moment, it is difficult to predict. The hospital will remain in full operation at the existing site for the next three years, and no plans are yet in place past that time.

Architect/Construction team? We selected the construction management team of JE Dunn Construction Group, Austin; Milton J. Womack, Inc., Baton Rouge; and Arkel Constructors, Baton Rouge.

Additionally, ccrd partners of Dallas was selected to work in partnership with Baton Rouge-based consulting engineering firm, Assaf, Tauzin, Simoneaux, and Associates, Inc. ABMB has been selected to provide civil engineering services for the project.

Woman's administration selected HKS Architects from Dallas in association with Ford|Dickinson of Baton Rouge to provide architectural services for the project.

New Campus Development
By Stan Shelton

We have officially moved from the programming phase into the schematic design phase.  The architects will work with managers during the weeks of May 7, June 4 and July 30 to create, refine and finalize floor plans.  During that time, we’ll also develop exterior renderings and finalize the campus master plan (images coming soon!).

Blocking and Stacking
Last month, a group of 60 people from all areas of the hospital met to determine adjacencies or what will be next to each other. The process is called blocking and stacking. This process helps to determine what will be on each floor and provides the architects enough information to determine how the overall buildings will lay out. HKS will present a floor plan to us on May 8.  We’ll then work through refinements during the rest of that week.

Universally-Sized Patient Room: The Mock Up
We are continuing to move forward in the creation of universally-sized patient rooms. We are actually constructing a 'real' room to scale. The room is being constructed in the Business and Technology (BAT) center. Once it is constructed, we'll make opportunities for people to visit and give feedback.

Room Amenities
We are close to finalizing the room’s size and shape.  In the mock-up process, we’ll be working on the room amenities such as bathtub, cabinets, TV, furnishings, etc.

Medical Office Buildings
We have also selected Lillibridge to plan the medical office building(s).  They will coordinate the planning and, perhaps, the construction of these buildings.  So far, they’ve interviewed most of our physicians, and they expect to issue a preliminary report before the end of May.

Project Budget
On April 27, the Woman’s Hospital Board met and approved the direction of the campus master plan and set an initial budget of $299,000,000.  We will soon be working with financial advisers who will help us determine the best way to manage the costs of the project, so our “budget” is subject to change some based on their evaluation and recommendations.

Cost Estimate
The construction management team
of JE Dunn Construction Group, Austin; Milton J. Womack, Inc., Baton Rouge; and Arkel Constructors, Baton Rouge, continues to refine its construction estimate.  So far, their estimate fits within the initial budget for the project.  We expect a detailed cost estimate at the end of the schematic design process in late July or early August.

Site Work
Engineers have recently conducted a geotechnical survey at the Briarwood location.  During this process, they bored 22 holes in the planned construction zone and collected soil samples.  They are now analyzing the soil to determine how to best design the foundation for the buildings.  We should have the results in a few weeks.

Exterior Design
HKS has continued work on the exterior design of the new hospital.  They presented some exterior concepts to hospital leadership on April 23 and to the Board on April 27.  They’ll be here on May 8 to give us a peek at their process.  Images for everyone to view will be available very soon.

Office Space
Catherine Nipper and I recently traveled to Dallas to get ideas for office layouts. The Workplace Resources Committee will continue to be involved in setting standards for employee work environments. Specific departmental workspace updates will come from area managers and directors in the next couple of months.

8-week look ahead
During the next eight-week period, we will:

·            Continue schematic design

·            Refine patient room configuration through mock-up process

·            Present exterior design details at June 20 Board meeting

·            Prepare Planned Urban Development (PUD) zoning change application (application due June 14)

·           Issue generator bid package in early June

Fitness Club Campaign

powerful_120_120

brilliant_120_120

fearless_120_120young_120_120A new Fitness Club campaign launched recently, featuring fitness club members. The campaign utilizes print, outdoor, TV and radio -- with fitness club members playing the lead role.

amazing_120_120Over 80 members attended a casting call, and almost half of them were selected for the campaign. They each had a special story to tell regarding how the Fitness Club had made a positive difference in their lives. Women in their 70s-80s shared the important role their membership plays in maintaining their independence and socializing. A 17-year-old said she tried Atkins, lost 15 lbs and then gained it all back --- then decided to manage her weight the RIGHT way by joining the Fitness Club. A breast cancer survivor (who was terribly shy) said her daughters were so proud of her that they convinced her to "try out" for the campaign. She told us how the Fitness Club helped get her back into a fitness routine after her treatment. A young woman in a wheelchair, who loves to (her words) "walk the track" with her mom, who is also a member, stopped by to check out the auditions. She and her mom were immediately recruited for the campaign -- you'll see them on the track in one of the TV spots.

There are so many wonderful women out there who share their lives with us through the Fitness Club. It's great to give them a chance to be in the spotlight!

Cafeteria Survey

The cafeteria will be conducting a customer satisfaction survey on May 10th. Cookies will be given in exchange for surveys. The surveying will be conducted all day and into the night owl shift on May 11th from 1AM - 3AM.
