Swine Flu Precautions
The latest information
from the CDC states that the swine flu is transmitted in ways similar to
other flu viruses. Seasonal human flu viruses are spread from person to
person primarily through large-particle respiratory droplet transmission
(e.g., when an infected person coughs or sneezes near a susceptible
person). Transmission by large droplets requires close contact between
ill (source) and healthy (recipient) persons, because droplets do not
remain in the air and generally travel only a short distance (3-6 feet)
through the air. Contact with respiratory-droplet contaminated surfaces
is another possible source of transmission. Keep your hands away from
your face including eyes.
ISOLATION PRECAUTIONS
Hand Hygiene – Hand hygiene is the single most effective way to
prevent infection:
-
Use soap and water
when hands are visibly dirty.
-
When washing hands
with soap and water, wet hands first with water, apply soap, and
rub hands together vigorously for at least 15 seconds, covering
all surfaces of the hands and fingers. Rinse hands with water
and dry thoroughly with a disposable towel. Use towel to turn
off the faucet. Avoid using hot water, because repeated exposure
to hot water may increase the risk of dermatitis.
-
If hands are not
visibly dirty, alcohol-based hand rubs have been shown to be more
effective in reducing the number of bacteria and viruses on hands.
-
When
decontaminating hands with an alcohol-based hand rub, apply
product to palm of one hand and rub hands together, covering all
surfaces of hands and fingers, until hands are dry.
