Farwell to a Founding Father

Thursday, August 21st, James Atkinson, MD, passed away.  Dr. Atkinson was one of the lead founders of Woman’s Hospital, the first chief of staff when the hospital opened, and served on the board of directors from 1973 - 1981.

Woman’s has benefited greatly as a result of his leadership, and lifelong commitment to make healthcare for women and infants unmatched. He was so proud of being a founder, and what we have accomplished to perpetuate their vision.

NICU: Darcy Gann, Nicole Square, and Melissa Ewing

Please welcome Melissa Ewing, the new NICU Nurse Manager. Melissa is a graduate of Louisiana Tech University and comes to us with 12 years of NICU experience, including charge and preceptor experience. She also has prior management experience in NICU, PICU and pediatrics at the Baton Rouge General.

ROCK-N-CHAIRity

The Circle of Friends committee hosted a rockin' night of fun at the second annual Rock-N-CHAIRity auction. The auction included 80 items ranging from chairs and paintings, to LSU memorabilia and jewelry, which helped to gross more than $50,000 for Woman's Community Care Fund.

Funds raised benefit the Community Care Fund at Woman's Hospital, which

help provide vital healthcare services and programs for women and infants in our community.

Woman's Makes News

Take a look at the front page of the Friday, August 22nd people section of the Advocate!  Woman’s Hospital scrub shop is featured in an article titled “Scrub style…Medical fashions soar beyond the old blues and greens”.  You’ll see the familiar faces of Woman’s Hospital employees modeling various styles.

Check out the cover of the Wednesday, August 20th Advocate, to read an overview of our concept plan that we filed with the city-parish for the new campus. This information was displayed in the cafeteria on Monday, August 11 and at the community open house on Tuesday, August 12.

Gabriella St. Amant, committee chair for Rock-N-CHAIRity, appeared on WAFB Channel 9 on Monday, August 18 at 6:15 am and on WBRZ's morning show on Thursday, August 21 at 5:45 am.

The Advocate also featured Woman's Hospital's Rock-N-CHAIRity event in its Thursday, August 21st edition.

Teri Fontenot was highlighted in the August 12 - August 24 edition of the Business Report. The story features hospital CEOs discussing the pros and cons of the business of healthcare.

Jamie Haeuser appeared on WAFB Channel 9 on Friday, August 22 at 6:15 am and WBRZ Channel 2 on Thursday, August 28 at 6:20 am.  She discussed the Woman's Comprehensive Breast Care Program.

Kristy Simmons and Cindy Thomas were published in the August AORN journal.  Their article focused on pediatric laparoscopy.

Cindy Thomas also presented Robotic Surgery: The Future is Here at the Baton Rouge District Nurses Association on August 14, 2008.
