Health-n-Motion
By Therese Bourgoyne

The Health-n-Motion (HnM) weight management program kick-off started with a bang on July 31st.  The conference room was bursting with over 200 employees ready to take on the challenge of being healthy and fit.  Pedometers and other fitness prizes were distributed, Fitness Club and Weight Watchers representatives were there to assist with enrollment, and employees had lab work done.  (The lab work results were used to complete a health risk appraisal – a customized report of an individual's personal health risks).

On-site Weight Watchers meetings began the first week in August.  The response to the program has been great (the lines for the weigh-ins at the lunch time Weight Watchers sessions are down the hall and around the corner!). Research shows that you can improve your health by losing as little as 10 - 20 pounds, and many of our employees have taken the first steps toward reaching their weight loss goals.

 There’s more:

·    We have negotiated corporate discounts with Anytime Fitness and Spectrum Fitness Centers, so all male employees now have affordable options for working out.  (You do not have to be a member of HnM to take advantage of this benefit).

·    The Fitness Club initiation fee is waived for HnM program participants, and you’ll also receive a 20% employee discount.  The Fitness Club provides select classes free of charge for program participants.

·    Signs are posted at the BAT Center, the Support Services Building, and on the 3rd and 6th floors of the Tower that say “Walking Trail – Start/Finish Here.”  The trails are a great way for all employees to get up and get active during lunch, breaks or before/after work.  And once it cools off outside, the American Heart Association will be back to measure and post signs on the walking track around the employee parking lots.

·    Look for the HnM logo on healthy eats in the cafeteria, vending machines and the retail shops.

Many thanks to the administrative team for their support; the HnM committee who believe in the program and commit their time to make it happen; the Lab, Fitness Club, Employee Health and Food Services staff for their time, resources and spirit of teamwork; and to each and every employee who has supported the program – as a participant, a mentor or as one of our case studies (you know who you are!)  This program couldn’t be a success without you!

The next session begins in March 2009.  If you’re interested in participating, stay tuned to your email early next year for details.

Saying Goodbye

The Day Surgery staff joined Nancy Curtin’s family and friends on Friday, August 22nd, to celebrate her retirement from Woman’s Hospital.

During Nancy’s 20 years of service, she worked as a RN in the Recovery Room for 7 years, and spent the remainder of her career in Day Surgery.

Tanya LeBlanc, Nancy Curtin, Virginia Haley, Joelle Lemoine, Julie Prejean, and Pollie Harris
Nancy and her husband plan to hit the road, and spend lots of time traveling.

They found loving families for their dogs, sold their house, and are moving to a smaller place where they can touch down when they come back to town.

Of course, they’ll have their LSU Tiger memorabilia proudly displayed on their car! Enjoy your retirement Nancy, and thank you for everything you’ve done for Woman’s Hospital and the women we serve!
